Ghorepani Poon Hill and Muktinath Trek is low altitude Classical Annapurna Circuit Trek route
Do you know that the Classical Annapurna Circuit Trek route encompasses Manang Valley, Thorong La Pass, Muktinath Temple, Marpha – Tatopani villages, Ghorepani, and Poon Hill in its itinerary? Yes, before the construction of road network in Manang and Mustang, trekkers from across the globe used to trek from Besisahar Lamjung to Nayapul Kaski via all these places. Back in 1976, the trail used to be the face of Nepalese rawness and rugged trekking adventure. The modern trekking scene has changed drastically over the years. Therefore, tourism experts are coming up with innovative idea to preserve the classical trekking experiences as well as utilize the modernization. It is to ensure sustainability.
The journey of the Ghorepani Poon Hill and Muktinath Trek is the low altitude short classical Annapurna Circuit Trek route sections. Please note that it is not the first phase of the classical Annapurna Circuit Trek route rather the reverse version of last phase of the trek route.
Ghorepani Poon Hill (3210 m)
There are few places in Nepal which are the pillars of Nepalese Trekking Industry. In fact, these places are always darling to travel lovers as any age group of trekkers can visit the place. Yes, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek route is definitely the top notch short trekking route of Nepal. The area is mainly habituated by the Magar People especially Pun or Poon sub – caste of this indigenous community. These people have their own language, traditions, and culture. Besides the chance to know these people, travelers get hooked by the scenery seen from the top of the Poon Hill (3210 m). The vantang point is located at the top of the hill full of green lush forests of rhododendron. The world’s largest and the most diverse rhododendron forest is in the area.
Travelers can enjoy the majestic sunrise from the Poon Hill offering the breathtaking scenery of mountains from Dhaulagiri Himalayan range and Annapurna Himalayan range.
Natural Hot Water Springs in Tatopani
The travel planners of the Nepal Trekking Rangers kept the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek route as the first phase of the Ghorepani Poon Hill and Muktinath Trek. There are two reasons behind this. They are the proper acclimatization chances and trekking difficulty. Tour to Muktinath and trek to Ghorepani is very tiring and altitude risky. Travelers travel direct to high – altitude Muktinath Temple (3710 m) from Pokhara (820 m). It is so risky to achieve such elevation in short space of time. In addition, the trail from Tatopani to Ghorepani Poon Hill is completely uphill through terraced farmlands, villages, and forests. Therefore, our trekking itinerary of the Ghorepani Poon Hill and Muktinath Trek is joyous with proper acclimatization opportunities and less steep uphill trekking sections.
Relish the natural hot water springs in Tatopani which is on the road to Muktinath Temple. It is so satisfying to dip in the natural hot water springs getting relieved from all kinds of tiredness and muscle strains.
Jeep Tour to Muktinath
A tour to the most sacred place after an amazing trekking trip is definitely dream holiday activity. Yes, trekkers become tourists upon reaching the Tatopani village from Ghorepani via steep downhill trekking through green lush forests. It takes about 4 hours to reach Muktinath Temple from Tatopani via Marpha and Jomsom. On the way to Muktinath, travelers can witness gorgeous waterfalls and unique Thakali villages.
Muktinath Temple
The temple is believed as the place of liberation. The 108 taps flow holy water which can clean all our sin. Interesting thing about the temple is that it is revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. According to Hindu mythology, the temple is of Lord Vishna and one of the Shakti Piths where Satidevi’s body part fell off. The temple is equally worshipped by Buddhists followers as the temple of Lord Avalokitesvara. The best way to showcase to the world about our unique cultural heritage and amazing religious harmony is through the Ghorepani Poon Hill and Muktinath Trek. Don’t miss out to do this amazing trekking and tour trip in Nepal for diverse holiday moments. The exciting part is that you can book the trek at just 1075 $ per person.

Know Before You Go
Why trek the Ghorepani Poon Hill and Muktinath trekking routes?
The Ghorepani Poon Hill and Muktinath trek, an absolute mix of nature, culture, and spirituality, is among the most soul-touching, shorter treks that Nepal can offer. This special and versatile trail swiftly offers everything, aimed toward nature lovers, photographers, culture buffs, and spiritual seekers alike.
From the lush green Annapurna hills, into rhododendron forests, through shady-magical villages of Gurungs and Magars, and finally from above centuries of snow-capped Himalayan scenes in Poon Hill (3,210 m), one of Nepal's most celebrated viewpoints: Onward toward the trans-Himalayan landscapes of Mustang rivers change view and culture around—very different, outright different scenery. Muktinath Temple (3,800 m) is the glue that holds both Hindus and Buddhists in spiritual search across Fistication. For every Himalayan base adventurer who yearns for a smorgasbord of high mountains and nature, plus sacred heritage, this trek promises to deliver an unforgettable trail.
Best Season to Trek
Spring (March, April, and May)
Spring is when the Himalayas truly come alive. Picture yourself trekking through entire forests that are afire with pink and red rhododendrons. It's otherworldly. The weather is warming up, everything is green and new, and the mountain views are usually crystal clear. That famous Poon Hill sunrise people go on and on about? In spring, it will blow your socks off. The Annapurnas look close enough to touch.
Autumn (September to November)
Autumn must be the favorite season of everyone. What with the monsoon having just gone through and washed all the dust out of the atmosphere, and everything being so crisp and clear. The days are just right for walking—not too hot, not too cold. And the nights are fresh and cool. You can get the perfect, stunning views of the huge snow-capped Himalayas. And who knows, you might be lucky and walk straight into a festival in one of the villages, which is an experience in itself.
Now, what about the other times?
You can go in the winter. The trails are quiet, and the snow on the peaks is beautiful. But you'd better be ready for the cold, especially up high near Muktinath.
And the monsoon season in the summer? Just don't. Unless you have a thing for leeches, trails that have turned into slippery mudslides, and a thick blanket of clouds hiding the very mountains you came to see, it’s just not worth it. Trust me on this one.
Food and Accommodation
Accommodation
You’ll be staying in a local teahouse or a lodge throughout the Gorepani Poon Hill and Muktinath trek. The facilities are basic, but you’ll feel like you’re at home. Rooms are usually twin-sharing bases with a simple wooden bed with a good mattress and a blanket, and a pillow.
Attached showers and other facilities in the teahouse are found in low altitudes like Pokhara, Ghorepani, and Tatopani, but in high-altitude areas, they are hardly more than basic ones. Rooms are chilly at night, especially in high-altitude areas, so it is best to have a sleeping bag of good quality. All the teahouses contain a big, shared dining hall.
Food
The teahouse offers a basic variety of food. You’ll be eating dal bhat, a Nepali staple that you’ll be served 2 times a day. Dal bhat is a wholesome combination of steamed rice, lentil soup, seasonal vegetables, and pickles, which is not only filling but also provides great energy for trekking.
You may also have other foods like pancakes, eggs, Tibetan bread, pasta, noodles, momo, and other foodstuffs ready at a teahouse. Hot drinks like tea, coffee, ginger lemon honey, and even hot chocolate are readily available. You may also try local apple products like apple pie, cider, and dried apples at Jomsom and Marpha, and elsewhere. The food is a little bit more expensive the higher you go, but it's prepared and safe to eat.
Trekking Difficulty
The Ghorepani Poon Hill and Muktinath Trek is moderately graded to suit first-timers and old-timers equally, from complete beginners to very fit trekkers. It is not a climb in terms of being highly technical or at a very high altitude, and thus it is the ideal way to get introduced to trekking in the Annapurna region.
There is a little up-and-down hiking on the trek, i.e., step-up rock climbing to Ulleri and step-up to Poon Hill (3,210m) but these are easily done with a short break and easy hiking. The high point of the trek is Muktinath (3,800 m), where altitude would hardly be felt, but most people feel it's alright as an after-effect of the step-up trail and road connectivity. Walking duration is 4 to 7 hours daily, based on the slope and walking speed.
Some experience in trekking is not necessary, but some conditioning through some sort of cardio workout, walking/hiking now and then before the trek, or an early morning walk will make it a pleasure. Comfortable footwear, layering, and drinking a lot of water also go a long way in the easy and pleasant trekking experience.
Permits and Travel Insurance
To trek the Ghorepani Poon Hill and Muktinath trails, you will need the following permits:
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
You will be paying around NPR 3,000 (which translates to USD 25) as foreigners. You get this permit from the Nepal Tourism Board offices in Pokhara and Kathmandu. Provide permit entry to the Annapurna Conservation Area, including the Ghorepani and Muktinath areas.
Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) Card
It is charged NPR 2,000 (approximately USD 17) by independent trekkers. It is offered by the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) or the Nepal Tourism Board. The card is used to monitor the trekkers for safety and rescue operations, if need be.
Note: In the event that you are trekking with a registered trekking agency, they will book all the permits for you.
Travel Insurance
We suggest getting travel insurance for this trek, though the route is graded extremely easy and moderate. Your insurance must cover:
Emergency medical insurance (including altitude sickness up to at least 4,000m)
Helicopter evacuation if injured or have altitude sickness in remote locations such as Muktinath or Ghorepani
Cancellation or disruption of the trip, particularly if flights to/from Pokhara or Jomsom are weather delayed
Lost or damaged baggage and equipment coverage
Make sure to bring a photocopy of your insurance papers and emergency contact information along during the trek.

Traveller Review
His quite nature, and taking care of things when and where required.
I spent over one month with Yuddha, his wife and team of assistants on treks and religious travel namely i) Annapurna , 5 days ii) Pokhara and Muktinath, 8 days and iii) Everest Base Camp and Three Passes, 19 days. I must say that my wife and I had wonderful time with Yuddha and his family. Yuddha is a true professional and goes out of way to make things happen. During my time there were several weather related events but Yuddha was able to find solutions for each adverse situation and allow us to continue our journey. He is flexible with timeline, providing facilities and help. My wife also stayed with his family while I was on trek. She thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality provided by his wife.
Prakash B 20th Oct, 2026 Great holiday on the roof of the world
Yuddha the company owner has taken care of everything from domestic flights to car transfers, hotels etc. He has put together a very individual trip that has left nothing to be desired. Also the hike Anapourna Circuit was perfectly organized. I can only recommend this company to anyone who wants to travel to Nepal individually.
Laura B 12th Aug, 2026 A Guide Who Truly Spreads Light
Yuddha is the best guide I have ever met. He is sensitive, very experienced, and always cheerful. He answered my questions with openness, honesty, and kindness. He paid close attention to our group’s needs, and I felt completely safe under his guidance. He booked wonderful accommodations for us and handled the meals very professionally as well. I hope I’ll get the chance to hike with him again — I really miss our conversations. 😊
Ghyzsofi 12th Aug, 2026 Highly recommend

I first met him as a customer during the trek, and by the end of the trip, we had become friends.Yuddha was incredibly supportive, knowledgeable, and attentive throughout the experience. Even after the tour ended, he continued to check in and offer extra care and help, which really meant a lot. His information, guidance, and genuine concern made the whole trip smooth and memorable. He is a truly nice guy—down to earth, mellow, and easy to be around. You can tell he genuinely cares about his clients and his work. I highly recommend Nepal Trekking Rangers and especially Yuddha to anyone planning a trek in Nepal. I sincerely hope his business continues to grow strong—he deserves it.
